Austin emphasised support for the Philippines in defending its sovereign rights and jurisdiction, it said. The Philippines routinely sends boats to the Second Thomas Shoal to deliver supplies to a small group of its soldiers posted to guard a warship that was intentionally grounded on a reef 25 years ago. The Philippines has been furious over what it calls repeated aggression by China's coastguard around disputed features located inside Manila's 200-mile exclusive economic zone.

CNN —A federal jury on Friday convicted Olympic boxer Félix Verdejo-Sánchez in the deaths of a woman and her unborn child, according to the US Attorney’s Office in the District of Puerto Rico. He was found guilty of kidnapping resulting in death and intentionally killing an unborn child, prosecutors said in a press release. Keishla Rodríguez Ortiz and her unborn child were found dead in the San José Lagoon in Puerto Rico on May 1, 2021. On the morning of Rodríguez Ortiz’s death, Verdejo-Sánchez carried out a premeditated plan to kill her and her unborn child, according to the release. Prosecutors said Verdejo-Sánchez lured Rodríguez Ortiz into his vehicle where, with help from another person, he assaulted and drugged her, the release stated.

"China must cease its swarming of vessels to respect our sovereign rights," Ariel Coloma, spokesperson for the Western Command, said in a statement. The Philippines won a landmark arbitration case in 2016 that invalidated China's expansive claims in the South China Sea, where about $3 trillion worth of sea-borne goods pass every year. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told his Philippine counterpart, Gilbert Teodoro, on Thursday that the U.S. commitment to the defense of its ally was "ironclad," including in the South China Sea, according to a U.S. summary of the call. The Philippines on Wednesday accused the China Coast Guard of harassment, obstruction and "dangerous manoeuvres" against its vessels, after another incident near a strategic feature of the South China Sea.
